Le Coinnle na nAingeal (The Candles of the Angels)

(с) Mike McInnerney, 1969

В Ирландии есть такая традиция: в Рождественскую ночь ставить свечи на подоконниках. В эту ночь Святое Семейство бродит по улицам в поисках приюта, и свеча в окне означает, что в этом доме их ждут и примут на ночлег.

Le coinnle na n-aingeal tá an spéir amuigh breactha,
Tá fiacail an tseaca sa ghaoith ón gcnoc,
Adaigh an tine is téir chun na leapan,
Luífidh Mac Dé ins an tigh seo anocht.

Fágaidh an doras ar leathadh ina coinne,
An mhaighdean a thiocfaidh is an naí ar a hucht,
Deonaigh scíth an bhóthair a ligint, a Mhuire,
Luíodh Mac Dé ins an tigh seo anocht.

Bhí soilse ar lasadh i dtigh sin na haíochta,
Cóiriú gan caoile, bia agus deoch,
Do cheannaithe olla, do cheannaithe síoda,
Ach luífidh Mac Dé ins an tigh seo anocht.

With the candles of the angels the night sky is speckled,
The fangs of the frost are in the wind off the hill,
Light up the fire and go to your bed,
The Son of God sleeps in this house tonight.

Leave the door wide open for her,
The virgin who comes with the babe in her arms,
Deign to rest here from the road, Mary,
Let the Son of God sleep in this house tonight.

The lights were all lit in that guesthouse long ago,
There was a generous spread of food and drink,
For merchants of wool, and for merchants of silk,
But the Son of God sleeps in this house tonight
